Buckhead Community Investment District (Atlanta, GA) Awarded $10 Million in USDOT funds to complete the Lenox Road Complete Safe Street Project

On September 5, 2024, the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT)  announced that the  Buckhead Community Improvement District  (BCID), in partnership with the Georgia Department of Transportation and the City of Atlanta, was awarded a $10 million Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Implementation grant to construct Section III of the Lenox Road Complete Safe Street project. Section III will construct a 0.62-linear-mile separated shared-use path and elevated pedestrian and bicycle bridge at the GA 400 interchange at Lenox Road. The interchange serves a 6-lane freeway.

The Lenox Road Complete Safe Street Project has three sections, all of which are currently in progress. Sections I and II are fully funded and will feature an urban linear park and enhanced pedestrian infrastructure between Peachtree Rd. and Phipps Blvd.

The Lenox Road Complete Safe Street project is part of the Buckhead REdeFINED initiative which emphasizes Mobility, Vitality and Livability as key themes guiding Buckhead’s future. Buckhead REdeFINED advocates for the creation of a public space framework, public art installation,  enhancements to pedestrian and bicycle connectivity, transit expansion and increased reliance on MARTA - Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority - the principal public transport operator in the metropolitan area, and diversification of housing opportunities.

Buckhead is a high density-mixed use development district eight miles north of downtown Atlanta. Buckhead is also an employment center with a workforce of 61,172 within a ½ mile radius.

The goals of the Lenox Road Complete Safe Street Project aligned well with USDOT’s SS4A grant selection criteria and, BCID offered a compelling case and reproducible data to substantiate the need for a bike-ped bridge over GA 400 which averages 127,000 cars daily.

Kalbacher Associates (KA) was pleased to work with BCID and its partners to prepare the winning SS4A grant application. Since 2018, KA has won 13 USDOT Infrastructure Development grants for clients totaling $187,917,294.  We welcome the opportunity to offer project management and grant writing services for your transportation project.
