SSAB Secures $500 Million US DOE Grant to Manufacture Green Steel

March 25, 2024 – The US Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that SSAB, a Mobile, AL based steel manufacturer, has been awarded a $500 million grant under the Industrial Decarbonization and Emissions Reduction Demonstration to Deployment grant program.  SSAB will use DOE and company funds to commercialize the production of Green Steel in Perry County, MS and Montpelier, IA.

SSAB’s project will be the first demonstration scale facility in the world capable of producing hydrogen reduced fossil-free sponge iron. The project will accelerate decarbonization of the iron and steel sector, provide sustainable solutions to a wide range of steel consumers, and create 540 full time jobs and ~6,000 construction jobs.

At the Perry County, MS facility, SSAB will use HYBRIT® – A new revolutionary steelmaking technology that produces  fossil-free Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) with 100% hydrogen gas as the fuel source. SSAB also plans to expand the company’s Montpelier, IA steelmaking facility to utilize the resulting hydrogen-reduced DRI.

The HYBRIT investment is intended to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 81% compared to traditional production methods of DRI in terms of normalized cradle-to-gate global warming potential (GWP). The SSAB Iowa projected production is expected to result in the realization of a 55% decrease in GHG emissions compared to current production methods in terms of normalized cradle-to-gate GWP.

Kalbacher Associates (KA) was pleased to be part of the SSAB consulting and grant writing team that prepared the winning application. DOE grant applications encompass all aspects of company operations from describing the technical plans; to addressing environmental considerations; to documenting the business imperative and plan for successful operation; and to developing a  meaningful and sustainable community engagement program.
